Our thanks to Susanne Maidment (right), a hummingbird enthusiast and bander, and Judy Reeds of Parkland Nurseries and Garden Centre, for delivering an excellent hummingbird workshop on June 8th. Susanne gave a presentation about hummingbirds and Judy brought planters and hummingbird-attracting annuals so each participant left with their own hummingbird planter. And a new appreciation for these amazing birds!
Ellis Bird Farm hosted Jordan Bell from the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) on June 2. Jordan led a workshop to explain a new app developed by ABMI called NatureLynx. This app, created for and by Alberta's nature enthusiasts, can be used to identify local species, learn about biodiversity hotspots and connect with other curious people. Ellis Bird Farm will be using the app to help identify plants and animals at EBF. See https://naturelynx.ca/ for more details. On Sunday, June 16th, Ellis Bird Farm is celebrating Father's Day in style. We have added a Nature Playhouse to our site and will be officially opening it at 1:00 PM. We will also be revealing our new Nature Discovery Packs, which will be lent out for families to explore the natural world at EBF at close proximity. In addition, from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM we are teaming up with the Alberta Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy to highlight Alberta's frogs and toads, and at 2:00 PM we are offering a guided hike to the West Woods. Come build a toad or salamander house for $4.00 or a bird feeder for $6.00. Come hungry because our Café is offering specials for the day. Celebrate the fathers in your life at Ellis Bird Farm!
Cory Olson of the Alberta Community Bat Monitoring Program put the finishing touches on a camera monitoring system in one of our large bat houses on Sunday, June 2. The EBF Grain Elevator bat box has the distinction of being the largest bat box colony of any monitored by the bat program!
On Sunday, June 2, Judy Boyd (in blue) led another very well-received Beginning Birder Workshop at Ellis Bird Farm. The group counted about 30 bird species over the course of the morning. Thank you Judy for sharing your time and knowledge with us!
We are very grateful to Joyce Walsh (who once owned the iconic Walsh Galleries in Red Deer) for donating three Robert Bateman prints to EBF. She is shown here with board members Maureen Carey (left)and Judy Schwartz (right). We will be using these prints for future fund raising efforts. Thank you so much Joyce for this generous donation!
Grant Loftus, owner of Water by Design, shows the finished pond to board member, Judy Schwartz. We will be hosting an official opening of this beautiful new feature at the Bluebird Festival on July 13th.
